Board Update

The Majors Creek Recreation Reserve is a multipurpose reserve made up of parcels of land owned by the NSW Government and NSW Local Government and is currently managed under the Crown Land Management Act 2016. The Board is responsible for the care, control and management of the Reserve on behalf of the people of NSW.

The Majors Creek Recreation Reserve was dedicated for Public Recreation in 1893. Over the last 120 plus years, the Reserve has been the hub of the village being host to local sports (rugby, cricket, tennis), social events (balls, weddings, parties) and the Annual New Year’s Day Picnic.

The Reserve’s facilities (tennis and basketball courts, cricket pitch, sporting fields and children’s play equipment) are used daily by locals and community groups. The toilet facilities are open to the public 24/7.

The newly appointed Board of the Majors Creek Recreation Reserve held its first meeting on Saturday 18 January 2025. The Board welcomed new members Matt Darwon and Scott Hart and expressed gratitude for the contributions of outgoing members Tony Moore and Craig Willoughby.

The Board highlighted the accomplishments of the past five years, including:

  • replacement of the wood rails and posts on the sporting/cricket field with powder coated steel rails and steel posts
  • new entry gate for the sporting/cricket field
  • installation of a BBQ in front of tennis court for anytime use with a new overhead protection build
  • installation of fans, sensor lights and security cameras
  • removal of dangerous trees on southeastern side of the Reserve allowing the safe use of almost an acre of additional ground
  • forming up and sealing of a new road (over 100 metres) funded by a State Government grant
  • new veranda funded through a grant from the Braidwood Community Bank.

This year the Board celebrates 60 years of volunteering by Brian McDonald OAM, almost half of the time the Reserve has been in existence! Brain joined the Board in 1965 and took over the role of Secretary and Treasurer in 1968 – a position he has held ever since. Brian’s commitment to the management and maintenance of the Majors Creek Recreation ground is exemplary and has ensured it’s success. His determination to presenting our Recreation Reserve as a place of enjoyment for the wider NSW community, along with his friendly smile, willingness to assist and share local history, gives Majors Creek Recreation Reserve the personal touch. He was a semi-finalist in the 2024 NSW Crown Land Managers Awards.

Looking ahead, the Board acknowledged the challenges of the current fiscal environment and expressed hopes to establish a new community centre with a community garden. The Board also plans to collaborate with Majors Creek RFS to address water issues and work with the Majors Creek Progress Association to build new amenities and develop the Majors Creek Museum.

Coming up, the Board is hosting a car boot sale and a community event to open the new veranda and celebrate Brian McDonald OAM’s achievement. All friends of Majors Creek are welcome.

The Board is committed to continuing its productive work in service to the community.
